No, we're not talking about losing weight today...

But I am a big fan of Jason over at Anyman Fitness (look him up if you want some help getting in shape) who talks about how the "holidays" are really only like 5 days, but the "holiday season" is a few months. He mentions it's ok to eat what you want for those 5 days, but don't pig out the entire holiday season.

Your finances are no different

If you did it right, you should have set aside a holiday budget for gifts and have a decent idea what you're willing to spend for everyone. If you didn't do it right, you're probably charging everything and figuring out the damage later.

The best way I've found to budget for Christmas is to plan your budget the first week of January for next year, and set aside enough each week in a separate account that doesn't get touched. Then when you're ready to start shopping, you'll have the money already available.

But the other half of that is not throwing the baby out with the bathwater... Not having the mindset of "I'm already $500 in debt for the holidays, might as well buy this gadget for another $400".

If you've already messed up this year, it's not too late to start planning for next year. Figure out your budget, open the account and start auto-withdrawing to make sure next Christmas you don't get the lump of coal known as "consumer debt".
